Home as it was when we lived there in 1975-1977
This is how the home looked when we lived there in 1975-1977. We only lived here for one year. We moved here when I was working at Burroughs. That job didn’t last. Then I started selling insurance and finally went back to Fuller Brush. It was at that point that we moved to Murray in March of 1977.
April was born while we were living in this home.
All we had was a single-car carport.
The basement was unfinished when we moved in. I finished most of the basement while living here. I’m sure they’ve redone it since we moved. It looks like they still have a swamp cooler.
I recall one other thing about this home, it didn’t have secondary water. The previous owners were given the option of tying into the secondary water system, but since they were moving shortly thereafter, they decided not to do so. Because of this, this home was one of the few (or only?) home in the neighborhood that had to use culinary instead of secondary water to irrigate the lawn. The back yard was quite large, so that meant a lot of watering.
The main Union Pacific RR was only a block away on the other side of the home. We didn’t know that until we moved in. The first night we were sleeping in this home we heard a very loud train coming along. I got out of bed because the train noise was getting very loud. It was then that we realized the mainline RR was only a block away. Our bedroom was in the back. The windows on the right are the bedroom windows for April’s room, although she slept in our room until we moved to Murray.
I enjoyed sitting in the front room (windows on the left) with April in my arms watching the planes landing at Hill Air Force base.
We also knew when the main Salt Lake Airport was fogged in because flights would get diverted to the Ogden airport and they would fly right over out home as they landed in the Ogden airport. This didn’t happen very often.
When we first moved here I was working for Burroughs as a territory manager selling computers. That didn’t work. While I liked working with computers, selling them wasn’t my forte. So, after about six months, I quit Burroughs.
After I left Burroughs, I went back to selling Fuller Brush again. This didn’t produce the income we needed. So I started looking for something else.
I was then hoodwinked into selling life insurance for Lincoln National Life. They made all kinds of promises to me that they would help me learn the ropes of the life insurance business. That didn’t happen. The person that promised to help me left the company shortly after I started working there. So, the insurance sales didn’t go very well. I was mainly targeting newlyweds for life insurance. They were the ones least able to afford life insurance, even though they needed it. I because very familiar with the Ogden area, as I had appointments to sell insurance all over the place.
When we first moved here we had two cars, but one of them, the old Rambler, gave up the ghost and we were down to one car.
Kathie gave birth to April while we lived here, but I was always on the road with the only car. She felt very stranded here, especially with a new baby and a husband that wasn’t providing very well for the family.
In March 1977 we moved to Murray, in which neighborhood we remained until 2019 when we moved to West Jordan.
Home as it is in 2023
This is the home as it is now (2023) A garage and the room above the garage were added after we moved. The house ended where you can see the foundation. The additional brick was added when they expanded the home.
